Tips on how to measure your boat trailer

1. Locate the Bung (Drain Plug) Start at the drain bung on the transom — that’s the lowest point at the very back of the boat where water drains out. 2. Find the Tip of your boat. This is the forward most point at the very front of the boat, excluding bow sprit. 3. Mark Both Points on the Ground With the boat sitting level, drop a vertical line (visually or with a plumb line) from the bung to the ground and make a mark. Do the same at the bow tip — mark where it touches or aligns with the ground. ✅ This helps eliminate errors caused by the curve of the hull or tape bending over the boat. 4. Measure the Straight Line Using your measuring tape, measure directly along the ground from the back mark (bung) to the front mark (bow). This is your accurate hull length, also called transom-to-bow measurement. 5. Record the Measurement Write it down in meters (m), rounded to the nearest 0.1m — for example, 4.3m.
